The Role Of A Geriatric Care Manager

By Jeannie Chapman

The phrase geriatric care manager can be used to describe a variety of workers employed in the field of geriatrics. Those employed in this capacity are also simply referred to as GCMs and their primary role is to help older individuals with their long-term needs on a day-to-day basis. They also offer support to those who must handle issues associated with looking after an elderly relative.

Those who work in the field mentioned above are typically familiar with specific disciplines such as health and human services, and provide assistance to family members who must care for aging loved ones. Many such individuals become certified through the NAPGCM, an organization that specializes in the training of those who work in this field. Such workers sometimes offer geriatric counseling and senior advocacy services as well. They also frequently intervene in times of crisis, isolating issues and offering solutions.

Most GCMs hold a bachelor's degree in nursing; however, certain individuals in this field may have a doctorate in gerontology. They usually have training and education in one or more fields regarding health care. For instance, they may have trained as a nurse, gerontologist, social worker, or geriatric psychologist.

There are currently no national or state licensing requirements necessary in order for one to seek employment as a manager in this field. However, most employers prefer that one have the aforementioned certification. Such requirements may vary greatly from one employer to the next.

Courses developed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in this field usually cover various topics. The latter include psychology, elderly care management, financial issues, balanced aging, and general nursing practices. Conventional colleges and universities, as well as online schools offer such courses. The venue one chooses will primarily depend on his or her financial situation and personal preferences.

A GCM can pursue employment at numerous establishments. These include assisted living facilities, government agencies, insurance companies, home health agencies, and long-term care facilities. The kind of establishment from which one seeks employment will depend on the facility's training requirements and the prospective worker's personal preferences. However, beginning one's own business in this field is also an option, although it can be a challenging endeavor. For this reason, each individual must carefully consider such aspects ahead of time.

Several aspects must be considered by those who want to seek employment in the aforementioned field. These include job duties, wages, and employment qualifications. For this reason, it is imperative for one to adequately research each online school or university before making a final decision. Otherwise, a person may spend time and money to obtain a degree or diploma that may be worthless in the eyes of a prospective employer. This is why it is best to choose an accredited school.

Ultimately, many job opportunities exist for anyone who wants to start a career as a geriatric care manager. The need for such services is increasing all the time due to the fact that the average lifespan is currently longer than ever before. Those who select employment of this type can look forward to good wages and steady work.
