How The Responsible Service of Alcohol has Legal and Social Dimensions

By Chloe Okoli

The Responsible Service of Alcohol is an Australian nationally accredited course that teaches people how to serve or supply alcohol in a responsible manner so as to minimize the harm associated with alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a legal drug, and those who are responsible for serving alcohol need to be qualified to do so. Alcohol consumption is an accepted and widespread part of Australian society, so those responsible for serving alcohol need to understand their duty of care to the public by knowing about the responsible service of alcohol.

Alcohol sale and supply is regulated by different laws in each of the states of Australia. Each state has their own Acts or Legislation that determines who can sell alcohol and who can consume it. Those who work supplying or serving alcohol need to obey the laws regarding the responsible service of alcohol, but they also need to think about how serving or supplying alcohol affects the people who are drinking it.

The legal responsibilities of serving alcohol are the things you need to do as part of your job in order to comply with the alcohol laws of your state. The laws ensure that alcohol is sold by responsible people and that the possible harmful effects of alcohol are minimized or avoided (harm minimization). The legislation also determine who may not be served alcohol, such as minors or the unduly intoxicated; when alcohol may be consumed, such as trading hours on licensed premises; and how alcohol may be sold, such as the different license types available to those who sell alcohol.

Most people drink alcohol in a responsible manner, but there is also the potential for harm if it is recklessly consumed. Anyone who serves, supplies or sells alcohol needs to consider harm minimization strategies. You need to think about the people you are selling it to, how much they are buying and how it will affect them. If you do not, you are liable for penalties such as fines or the suspension or cancellation of your liquor license.

If you sell, serve or supply alcohol you also need to be aware of your social responsibilities regarding the responsible service of alcohol. You need to think about how to be a constructive and positive employee or employer, running a good business and also how you are impacting your community when selling, serving or supplying alcohol.

Socially, when you sell alcohol, there are different things you need to be and do that go further than just obeying the law regarding the responsible service of alcohol. When you consider the social aspects of serving, supplying or selling alcohol you are also a salesperson who needs to know what you are selling to people; a cleaner who keeps things tidy and hygienic; a safety officer that thinks about the well-being of the customers and any associated health and safety risks; and also a great host, who can create a warm and welcoming environment for your patrons or customers.

The Responsible Service of Alcohol involves both legal and social aspects. Someone who serves, supplies or sells alcohol in a responsible manner is bound by the legislation and regulations, yet also by the social responsibilities of working with other people, and within the community, and to do so in a positive and constructive way. The best way to understand your legal and social obligations under the Responsible Service of Alcohol legislation in your state is to complete the Responsible Service of Alcohol Course and gain the accredited Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.
