Free Marriage Records Online Retrieval

By Claire Dowell

If you need to get a copy of marriage records in New Jersey, the State Office of Vital Statistics and Registry should be your first stop. The office has all the New Jersey Marriage Records that were filed beginning the year 1901 up to the present. If it is the older records that you need to obtain, though, especially those from 1848 to 1900, the right office to approach is the State Archives. There are also microfilms at the Archives for marriage records from 1901 up to 1940, but these are all for in-person use only. You cannot take them home or make copies of them.

One of the reasons for obtaining a copy of marriage records is the need to verify a person's background, especially if you have just met him or her. Another reason is for personal file keeping and updating, or for completing the family tree. You may also be required to submit a copy of your marriage record when applying for or closing business or government deals.

The process for filing a request in New Jersey is not really complicated. You just need to have your requirements ready so that you won't waste a lot of time. A valid ID (or photo ID) is required. Since certified copies of marriage records are given only to the couple on the record, their parents or legal guardian/representatives, spouse, child, sibling, and grandchild; you will need to prepare some proof of your relationship to the individuals who own the record. Additionally, you should be of legal age upon filing the request. If you are an authorized representative of a Federal or State agency; or if you need the Marriage Record to comply with a court order, you will also be handed a certified copy.

For applicants who do not fall into any of the qualified categories, a certification stating that the record cannot - and must not - be used for legal or identification purposes will be given. One copy or request is worth $25; and if you need additional copies, you are to pay $2 for each only provided that you order the records on the same day you asked for the initial copy. Options for ordering vital documents can be found at the New Jersey Vital Statistics website.

The downside to accessing public records through state offices is the lengthy waiting period. Since most state offices are swamped with requests, you will need to wait for days or weeks before the result of your request comes out. If long waiting periods is not your kind of thing, then you will love to work with online record searchers. These Internet-based providers work in the fastest and most efficient manner possible because they have their own comprehensive database. They can access their database any time of the day. As a result, you will have the New Jersey Marriage Records you need in a matter of minutes. As long as you fill out the form with the complete marriage details and then submit it, your request is as good as granted.

One of the advantages of using online record searchers is the element of convenience. Everything can be done right in the comfort of your home. This means that you can do all your household chores and home business tasks without interruption. You only need to log into the provider's website, click a couple of buttons here and there, and enter the data being asked from you. The best thing about this whole process is that you don't need to spend for every request that you make. Online record providers ask for a minimal fee - and you pay this once only - not every time you want a Marriage Record! In addition to all these, you get to enjoy unlimited access to all the public records you might need. Now, isn't that one practical alternative?
