IL marriage records or the marriage certificates that the state of Illinois generates are among the most accessed documents of the state. The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the local government of the state to allow its local residents to access the file whenever it is needed.

The residents of the Illinois request it for a number of reasons. One is to use it for research on the family tree. Most of genealogy researchers would refer to this document in order to get information to update the family history records. Another use of the marriage certificate is for dealing with transactions in any government offices. Some requests in government offices would require a copy of a marriage certificate as proof of one's identity and status. Examples of such transactions includes but not limited to insurance and other financial related transactions. Such document is also used in conducting background check. This is the method used by individuals who wants to check the marital status of their partners to avoid problems should they plan to get married later.

A marriage certificate issued in the state of Illinois would contain details about the marriage of a couple. One would know the complete names of the bride and the groom. Other important details that can be found on the file include the date and the place where the marriage took place. Some personal information of the couple can also be found on the certificate along with the names of the parents and the witnesses.

Marriages that took place and have been registered since January 1962 are the only files that the state office of Illinois releases. A processing fee of $5 has to be paid in order to proceed with the search. To simplify the search, it is recommended to provide the basic information of the record that is being requested. The one who requested for the record has to indicate their contact details as well as their relationship with the person on the file. This is important since the document is only released or given to the couple themselves and their immediate relatives. It takes a maximum of 10 days to get the requested record if there are no problems with the retrieval.

The marriage records of Illinois are archived at the Department of Health of the state. But the said office is not responsible for releasing copies of the said file. The office can only help in verifying the needed information. One has to go to the county clerk office where the marriage was registered. Requests can be prioritized if it was sent by mail since the staff also has other tasks that they may overlook undocumented requests.
