Shopping At Thrift Stores Hanover PA

By Jaclyn Hurley

The recent economic down turn has really made a lot of people think more carefully about how they spend their money. When times were good they could simply buy everything new and throw away things they no longer wanted. Yet the big market crash has really forced many people to start looking for better ways to shop. All of these factors are combining to make thrift stores Hanover PA more popular than ever.

This type of store, also known as a consignment store has been around for many years. However, it was typically viewed as the domain of the earth mother who dressed her children in outfits reminiscent of the flower power age of the 1960's. But in the past few years the shops have really reinvented themselves and moved into the mainstream market place.

Families simply do not have as much money as they used to. In many cases just paying the monthly bills and putting food on the table does not leave much for luxuries such as toys and books. Although it may have begun as a matter of necessity, shopping at the local consignment store has now taken on almost a prestigious aura.

Many people are also attracted to the environmentally friendly aspect of shopping for used items. Every year literally tens of thousands of tons of garbage end up in land fill. This is a trend that many areas are working hard to change. Every time people reduce, reuse and recycle that is one less thing to dispose of. Once they get on board with the concept of recycling it is quite amazing how many other small things people incorporate into their daily routines. Before long environmental awareness become second nature.

Clothes and shoes are also sold in many consignment stores. Many parents are finding that this is the perfect place to find barely worn children's clothes. They can save a significant amount of money and have their kids kitted out in some of the most desirable brand names.

Most shops have an extensive selection of baby clothes. Infants grow out of their clothes in a matter of weeks and never really wear them out. Moms often buy a beautiful outfit just for holiday pictures and their child never wears it again. Selling it through a consignment store gives them the chance to get at least a little of their money back.

Toys, books and games are usually offered as well. Plastic toys will last for years and there are some great bargains to be found, especially for shoppers who make the effort to stop by on a regular basis and see what is available. Electronics are also very good sellers, along with video games and DVD's. It just makes sense to spend a few dollars for a barely used item that the kids will be bored with in a matter of weeks.

Not only does a consignment store help the local community, but it also helps the environment. It seems that once people realize they can make a positive contribution they quickly look for other ways to help. Even the smallest actions add up to make a big impact. Shopping close to home is a big part of the trend to help the planet.
