Some Glad Morning: A Novel With A Soul.

By Georgetta Ivers

I love my job. Reviewing books is like hunting for treasure. Every once in a great while I find a real gem, something I know will become a bestseller and will probably be made into a movie. That's how I feel about Some Glad Morning, a novel by Gary C. Horton. Read it and you'll see what I mean.

I'm thrilled to recommend the novel Some Glad Morning by Gary C. Horton. Without a doubt it is the best novel I have read this year, perhaps the best I have read in many years. It's about a young man fighting overwhelming odds for love. But it's more than a love story. It will melt your heart, touch you in so many ways and leave you wishing and hoping and thinking.

Some of the many things you will find endearing about Some Glad Morning are the characters. Some are quirky, to say the least, some are inspiring and some will take your breath away. It is as if somehow Mr. Horton has made the familiar magical. You'll want to tell others about this book.

The hero is Ransom MacTavish, a poor farm boy from South Carolina, who joins the Army to earn cash for his destitute family. It's the spring of 1918 and Ransom is quickly sent to France to fight in World War I. An assault across no man's land goes horribly wrong and Ransom is trapped in a shell hole with a dying officer.

The young officer has in his pocket the love letters from his fiancee, a Charleston lady named Elizabeth. As a dying wish, the officer asks Ransom to read to him the letters. In a heartbreaking scene I will never forget, Ransom reads to the young man as he dies. Later, as Ransom lies wounded for days in that shell hole, he finds solace in Elizabeth's letters and falls in love.

After the war, Ransom pursues Elizabeth in spite of the fact that he is penniless and she is a Charleston aristocrat. The situation is hopeless as Ransom faces a wealthy and unscrupulous competing suitor, pig-headed racism, destitution and unforgiving stupidity.

The course of love never did run smooth and Ransom stumbles through his trials. With the help of a crusty Civil War veteran who talks to himself and a pet raccoon, and the unflinching integrity of a pregnant runaway, Ransom is made stronger by his trials. He learns to love and to love deeply.

Some Glad Morning ended on such a resounding beat I wanted to cheer. Read Some Glad Morning and I bet you'll think to yourself, 'This would make a great movie.' It's not a movie yet, but it has been made into an audio book performed exquisitely by the notable voice actress Janet Metzer. Read Some Glad Morning. You'll love it.
